Why does a tax-supported agency like Animal Care & Control need your support?  Simply put, ACC competes for limited city revenues with approximately 75 other municipal agencies. In July 2000, Friends of San Francisco Animal Care & Control was founded by volunteers to establish funding for vital programs that are not covered by the City budget, which provides basic care.

DONATE ONLINE to Friends of SFACC (External Link) and your tax-deductible gift will directly support these crucial programs:

  • Behavior & Training staff, who evaluate animals for adoption, train volunteers, and coordinate fosters for mother dogs/puppies
  • Low-cost rabies vaccine/microchip clinics for the public, held at ACC
  • Grants for local rescue/adoption partners
  • Emergency medical procedures for abused, neglected, or injured animals that require specialized care beyond what ACC veterinarians can provide
  • Staff & volunteer appreciation events and special workshops
  • Equipment and supplies not covered by the city budget that improve the quality of the animals’ lives in the stressful shelter environment, such as orthopedic dog beds, astroturf in the shelter dog yard, neonatal kitten supplements, and toys and treats for all the animals

Friends of SFACC is a registered 501 (c)(3) nonprofit and is an all-volunteer-run organization. Operation costs are low to ensure the animals receive the care and support they need. The federal tax ID is 94-3371620.

You can also help support ACC’s programs through your workplace matching gift program, your estate, online shopping, donating your car, or by planning your own creative fundraising event. For more information on any of the following fundraising programs, please contact [email protected].

Vehicle Donation
Donate Your Car, Boat, RV or Motorcycle to Vehicles for Charity – Auction City (External Link) by completing an online form (or they will do it for you!) They will then schedule a pickup to tow your car at no cost, and send you a tax receipt. Be sure to let them know you want the proceeds from your vehicle to benefit Friends of San Francisco Animal Care & Control (tax ID is 94-3371620).
Community Thrift Partnership
Donate items like furniture, electronics, clothing or house wares to the Community Thrift (External Link) store at 623 Valencia St., San Francisco, CA 94110. When you drop off your donations, tell them to assign the charity partner number 120 and a portion of the proceeds from the sold items will go to Friends of SFACC.
Pet Food Express My Mutt Program
Have your pet’s photo displayed in a Pet Food Express store while you help ACC! All you have to do is make a donation of at least $250 (per pet in photo) to Friends of SFACC (donations must be within the same calendar year as the My Mutt application). Your donation should be sent directly to Friends of SFACC, c/o ACC, 1200 15th Street, SF, CA  94103. Pet Food Express (PFE) needs only proof of your donation via a receipt with your application. PFE will then hire a professional pet photographer to arrange a photo shoot of your adorable critter and after you choose an image, they’ll enlarge the photo to poster size and display it in the store of your choice. You get to see your “celebrity” pet every time you shop for food and supplies. Those who donate $250 or more will see their poster displayed in the store for six months, and for a donation of $500 or more, the image will be up for a year. Go to (External Link) to submit your application after making your donation to Friends of SFACC.
Matching Gifts
Many companies offer employee matching programs that will double or even triple a donation made to charity. Check with your human resources department to verify and extend your donation even more in support of the animals.
Toy Drives
Toys keep ACC’s animals awaiting adoption engaged and happy in a kennel. Our Behavior & Training Team has identified toys that work well in our shelter (safe and durable to withstand repeated washing and use). Share the SFACC wish list with your co-workers, friends, or family to select pre-approved items that can either be shipped directly to ACC or to your office if you’d rather bring them to the shelter in person.
Planned Giving
Your legacy gift to the Friends of San Francisco Animal Care & Control (Friends of SFACC) will continue helping us rescue and protect homeless, unwanted and abused animals long into the future. All legacies left to Friends of SFACC, no matter what the size, provide a much needed resource and may allow you to take advantage of favorable charitable deduction tax laws. A legacy does not have to be cash, it can be real estate or securities. You can structure the bequest to leave a specific item or amount of money, make the gift contingent on certain events, or leave a percentage of your estate to Friends of SFACC. Many savings accounts, checking accounts, mutual funds, annuities, life insurance policies, and retirement plans allow you to make a charitable gift using beneficiary designations. If your estate is subject to estate tax, your gift is entitled to an estate tax charitable deduction for the gift’s full value.

Gifts of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and real property also qualify for a charitable income tax deduction, and help you avoid capital gains taxes and reduce potential estate taxes. Estate gifts should be directed to the “Friends of San Francisco Animal Care & Control, Federal Tax ID #94-3371620.”

Give to the City Fund
This Give2SF fund (External Link) serves SF’s stray, injured, abandoned and abused animals. ACC is the only organization in SF that accepts and tries to place all animals, domestic and wild. ACC responds to all animal related emergencies to protect and assist humans and animals.

The Donation Report CY 2016 and the Donation Report CY 2017 list previous gifts to this city fund, under the General Services Agency (25 departments), and includes those made at the shelter.

Fundraising Event Ideas…or Invent Your Own

Planning a fundraising event is not only fun, it’s an opportunity to help SFACC’s animals by raising both funding and awareness. You supply the idea, we supply the procedures and guidelines that will make planning a fundraising event easy—and fun. Golf tournaments, marathons, wine tastings, auctions, grand openings, holiday parties, bike-a-thons, walk-a-thons. It’s up to you!

  • Host a Toy Drive: Each year Friends of SFACC purchases close to $10,000 in toys and treats for training and also to keep our animals engaged and happy during their stay with us. Businesses can help offset those costs by hosting a toy drive for the animals at our shelter.
  • Have a Party or Sports Event: A group or individual can host an event or sponsor an activity and make SFACC the beneficiary. (i.e. an organization may host a golf outing and donate to SFACC a check for the net profits from the event.)
  • “Piggy Back” on an Existing Event: Add a third-party fundraising element and receive the income produced from that element. For example, a company may have an annual party and ask their employees to bring donations of new pet toys or canned food for SFACC or, a group can sponsor an annual marathon and offer registrants the opportunity to receive pledges for SFACC.
